A WEEK LATER, Josie, Peter, Ashlyn, and the Steinbergs convened at Sammie and Bob’s house again. But this time, the other women from Kramer’s IVF seminar joined them. Bob and Sammie had been secretive about why they asked everybody to bring bottles, toys, and pacifiers from their babies. After the group had settled, Sammie plunged right in.

“I’m a reporter, not a scientist, as you all know,” Sammie began, looking around at the curious faces. “But Bob, my husband here, is a molecular biologist, and so is Ashlyn, Katy’s mom.” She glanced at Ashlyn, whose gray face was a portrait of grief.

Sammie went on to explain that while neither Bob nor Ashlyn had specific expertise in infant diseases, they knew their way around different techniques for studying DNA.

“So that’s why you wanted us to bring in all these bottles and toys?” asked one of the women from the IVF group.

“Exactly,” interjected Ashlyn, finally coming to life a bit. She reached behind her chair and showed the group a big box of gallon-sized ziplock bags. She handed one to each woman.

“Put your child’s toy or bottle in these, with your name on it and with the date of birth. We need to keep each child’s DNA separate from the others.”

The women dug into bags and purses and put their contributions into the ziplock bags.

“What are you going to do with all this?” one of the women asked.

Sammie jumped in again. The goal, she explained, was to compare all the samples of DNA and see where they differed. The hope was that there would be some detectable difference in the DNA of the babies who had died compared to the others.

She stressed that everything about this had to be kept confidential. They had to make sure not a word leaked out to anybody, especially anybody in Kramer’s lab. She also decided not to tell the group that Bob and Ashlyn would do the DNA work at night secretly, in Bob’s MIT lab. MIT would not be happy. But that was okay. For now.
